Any band who describe themselves as ‘Doll Metal’ on their Facebook page have me intrigued… and who add women, witches & sex as their influences well – we’ve got to have a listen to this trio from Budapest, Hungary!
The album itself is 12 tracks that I can best describe as dark, haunting and beautiful. Sits somewhere around the hypnotic tones of Tori Amos mixed with some Hole style punk thrown in amongst some heavier metal sections. Spooky intro ‘Enchant’ leads into ‘Grey Witch’ starting gently before kicking into a metal tune – superbly written.
Album highlight for me ‘Dark Sea Blue’ with its string and acoustic intro before the rock verse and chorus layers lead again into a heavier section. ‘Ivory Ballad’ is another dark tune packed with great riffs before first single ‘Crush Honey’ (check out the video on their FB page) takes a decent leaf from the Hole punk tunes and influence.
‘Morganas Song’ is an almost indie rock track yet sits well in amongst the other songs and ‘Hollow Red’ for all its minute or so long is another soulful, dark journey. ‘My Lullaby’ has a fantastic catchy chorus that drifts to almost folk guitar in the verses and really is another highlight. ‘Easy’ doesn’t excite in the way some of the other songs do but ‘HKA Bitch’ gets things punking along again with appropriate angsty vocals and a really really wacky chorus.
‘Fallen’ has a great heavy intro and riff and really keeps things moving well. Album closer ‘Gone’ slightly more rock & roll end to things and a great finish too. I think this is a great album. It takes the listener on a real journey musically and lyrically as all great albums should. The genre may not appeal to all but the more open minded will really savour this.
