This band have been surrounded by a lot of hype over the past months, and one listen to this album is enough to make you understand why. Highly charged blues rock backed by a female vocalist with an incredible voice, seriously there is no other way to describe it.
Musically it sounds like gutter blues played through a fuzz box. It sounds as though it’s been dragged kicking and screaming through the saloon door after one too many fire waters and thrown into the gutter, and now it’s pissed off. Add all of that to a female vocal with a power and soul possessed by very few, and you have something really quite special.
Now there have been some great female vocalists over the years, and in this particular genre you have the likes of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Sass Jordan to contend with, and I can honestly say that this is right up there with them.
The songs themselves groove along nicely, and at times have a very psychedelic sound to them, sounding not unlike Jefferson Airplane or Hendrix in that respect. It’s a really interesting mix of styles, and it really makes you sit up and take notice. It throws in the odd curveball too, just to catch you unawares, and quite often you find yourself wondering what the fuck just happened.
This is certainly a stand out album, and for all of the right reasons. It’s musically challenging, intelligent, and extremely well executed, but I think what sets it apart is that it’s exciting. There’s not a lot of music out there that’s similar to this, and whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure, this is music of the highest order.
