As the monolithic asylum doors drifted slowly open, I was greeted with an eerily enchanting ingress: (Apollyon) a filmic horror score that lured me in, unsure of what lay in wait. I turned the first corner to face an onslaught of discord, sour melody and driving percussion echoed all around (Empire in Decay). My pulse quickened as a voice of blistered, sickly hate drew me in. A spirited walk through the dimly lit corridors took me further and as I entered a beckoning room, I was starting to breathe more quickly.
I was not alone (The Fiend Staring Back At Me). My senses were filled with a barrage of rapid, gut-wrenching chords, and the disharmony built… I was becoming lost within the dissonance; my trepidation dissipating… ardor prevailing. A blood-flow of warmth now coursing through my body, I moved into a chamber replete with full and luscious rhythms (A Halo Of Crows). The cadence enraptured me; I did not want to leave. The vast, voluminous mix of the bizarre and beautiful menace now fully encompassed me, my eyes wide, my flesh suffused with pin-pricks of monstrous ecstasy as waves of sound washed over me.
My remaining time there is naught but a memory of semi-conscious bliss, a dreamlike journey through the labyrinths of surreal (Reckoning) and sublime (Shepherd of Erebus). I long to return, and perhaps I will take you there. But be warned, this is no place for the weak of heart. Yes, you will find the euphoria you seek, but know that once you have tasted the delights of A Monster in Mourning, you too will feel my predisposition. This is an experience that will steal a piece of your soul.
Intrigued?… You can hear the album in full exclusively (with track-by-track commentary from the band) on The Squatter Spot on TBFM Online – Sunday 16th August 10pm until midnight. Join the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/893195687434042/
