Oh, was I happy when Kinasis were brought to my attention. As much as I love to lord it about that I have incredibly eclectic taste in music in a smug and self-satisfied manner, there is absolutely nothing that will make me happier than banging on a little something that is hard, fast and incredibly heavy. On the stereo, I should probably add… Kinasis have recently made it through to the final of the Bristol leg of the Metal 2 The Masses competition, and as someone who has been heavily involved in the competition in my local area this year, I’m fully aware of the sheer guts, determination and pure talent it takes for a band to get that far.
Kinasis make no secret of their drive to succeed, and that attitude shines through on this album. They are taking no prisoners. The first track “9.0” opens with an unrelenting pummelling of the senses, and barely lets up for the entirety of the album. It’s probably quite sickening to many musicians as they manage to make it sound so simple and effortless, but the time changes and technical elements of their music is mind-boggling. Second track “Ersatz” continues in a similar vein, and upon listening to the riffs and vocals it seemed to bring to mind the recently (and sadly) defunct Sa-da-kO, although it’s a lot harder to imagine Kinasis cracking out a live cover of “Boom! Shake The Room!”
The lead single, “Mechanical Rapture”, encapsulates everything the album is about perfectly:- a little bit of melody interchanged with angry, spat out vocals; the aforementioned complex time-changes next to some irresistible hooks; a bit of grind and a bit of groove. The album closes out with “Mimicry, Ambivalence And Hybridity” and it is my definite favourite. In fact, it made me want to listen to the whole album again. Which I did, about 4 more times. I need to see this band live. I might start making enquiries and see if I can get them to come and play in my living room tomorrow… Superb.
