Another band hailing from the Yorkshire area of the UK are Spill Sixteen, bringing us some southern US style Rock n Roll with some British steel. The band have been touring steadily over the past 2 years and are playing at next year’s HRH AOR festival alongside the likes of Skid Row and Tesla. The band play classy melodic rock with great hooks and nice melodies, but also kicking out with some heavier tunes.
Not meaning to pigeon hole the band but the quality and style here is in line with Black Stone Cherry, which I hope they take as a compliment. This is good old fashioned blues rock that doesn’t sound dated, if that makes sense! Stand out tracks like ’By You’ that the Black Crowes would be proud of. Groovy songs, which in years gone by would have made for great singles aired on US radio, abound throughout the album. ‘Lovedrunk’ is a beautiful slowish soulful tune, which kicks in a little, before taking you back down, great tune.
The ’70s rock influences are upfront so much that I feel like I have been listening to these songs for years and not just the past month. You got to congratulate the band on adding the haunting ‘You Make Me Cry’ with just piano and vocals.
