Opener ‘Blue Skies’ kicks in & grabs the listener’s attention straight away, it’s fiery & foot tappingly good. Catchy as hell ’Six Feet Under’ is a sleazy punkier riff filled beast with an infectious shout-a-long chorus. Slightly darker we have ‘Vampire’ which constantly comes back to me when I’m not listening to the album. Humming along to the tune & singing along to myself ‘lick your lips & tell me you love me‘, usually in the most inappropriate places. ‘Dion’ comes strutting along, more of a classic rock tune & another memorable chorus, great hooks with a short killer guitar solo.
That lies true throughout this, the second album from the talented musicians known as The Idol Dead. An album that came about with the help of fans pledging through the WeFund website. It pulls together all the best forms of rock music in the last 50 years & blends it up & spits it out screaming & shouting into the now. It’s fresh, vibrant, well produced & wonderfully played.
‘Hey Girl’ comes crashing in like a ride through the best of the 80s cock rock bands, but pinned up against a wall by the Wildhearts! Furiously punking it up again with guitars flying all over the place is ‘Bad Fiction’, as does penultimate track ‘I Don’t Wanna’.
Agh but wait, step back ‘baybeee’ to the awesome song that is, ‘I’m Drowning’. Starting off acoustic & with guest singer Claire Cameron’s beautiful vocals duetting with swaggering exuberant front man Polly, it builds into an emotional monster power ballad, guitar solo’s blazing, the climax brings me to my knees & finally the acoustic fade out. I don’t think I’ve listened to the album in full with out replaying this track again & again! More gloriously memorable anthems follow with ‘Bleed’ having what all great songs have a ‘whooa-ohoo-whoa-woa’. ‘You Don’t Know’ is another mid paced classic rock type song, that chugs along dirtily to a screeching little solo & then more of the glorious singalong chorus bringing the song to an abrupt end.
Excellent riffing & guitar hero solo‘s from KC & Tim have me frantically airguitaring throughout! I have had this album since it’s pre-release date & it didn’t appear as my album of the year in one listen. I had heard a couple of the songs live & I would have given it a 4/5 rating on the first few listens. Here I’m supposed to write that it has grown on me over the last few months, truth be known it was a couple of weeks! The quality beat & groove of the rhythm section, Nish & Dan apparent throughout.
The album finishes with ‘Beautiful Disaster’, which brings together everything that is great about the whole album into one song! Now I’m not a musician, just a rock fan of over 30 years & a few gigs behind me & I can hear lots of technical musical things going on here, like key & tempo changes etc, but at the end of the day to me it’s just a fabulous quality bit of rock & roll. SJRox’s album of the year 2012!
