The Clan are a good time Feel Good three-piece rock band. Delivering fun and entertaining performances for all types of audience; combining passion, enthusiasm and classic original anthems with a sprinkling of classic rock covers for a fun and memorable night out. After all Rock & Roll was never meant to be taken seriously. Vocals and Guitarist Craig McDonald chats to TBFM’s Mucka Jay…
What was the last album you purchased?
Bernie Torme’s Blackheart. I have been a major fan of Bernie since the Gillan years and have bought everything he has put out over the years. I admire him for doing the music he wants to do rather than bowing to musical trends or fashions. It is not to everyone’s taste but that is fine. If we all liked the same thing it would be very boring wouldn’t it?
If your music could be used in an advert on TV, what would you most like it to be advertising?
Well it would be good if a song like “Rock for You” were to be used for some major forthcoming event such as The Olympics, World Cup, Formula 1 or similar. I think that would work quite well and be pretty cool. That or to advertise some major action film.
If you were to do a cover of a song, what would it be and why?
Well don’t laugh but we did actually cover Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” as a single some time ago. Why – well It has a great T.Rex inspired riff and I love T.Rex, also when the horrible keyboards are not there it rocks up quite nicely together with a catchy chorus. Don’t forget Andy Taylor from Duran, who I think wrote it, has always been a rocker and produced Thunder’s first album, so don’t be too quick to judge. It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing haha.
Dead or alive, which band would you most like to co-headline with?
Slade (original line up). I think they have the same attitude as I do, that music is fun and to be enjoyed not taken too seriously. Having said that you need to put on a good show which we try to do and Slade definitely did. They were also not averse to rockin’ out loudly which was no bad thing either.
What has been the most memorable moment in your musical career so far?
Probably releasing my solo album Pies, Pasties and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Although the Clan have since taken those songs and each input their own personalities on them improving them in the process it was still nice to finally do it. I didn’t want to have the regret of looking back in years to come wishing I had done it.
If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Well signing the Clan would be a good start haha. Seriously I think there should be more encouragement for new Music. It seems to be at a point now where people just want familiarity hence the rise of Tribute bands and the mainstream rock radio stations who just program 95% of familiar and predictable tracks.
No major problem with that but music needs to keep moving forward otherwise what will the tribute bands of the future be playing? At the moment new music is almost a niche thing championed by the passionate few such as TBFM which is to be applauded but there needs to be a major change overall.
