Asylum City Zoo are a new Metal band from Manchester. On hearing the bands name I visioned the 4 guys with punk style Mohicans and bullet belts thrown forward in time from the 80s, but I was very wrong.
Ok these guys do still look a bit scary on there website but I’m sure it’s all for fun. There self titled EP is more like a mini album with 6 tracks but the band are selling it as an EP so therefore it’s good value with the extra songs on there.
The opening track is called ‘Circus of Souls’ and what a great one to kick off. The guitar sound is heavy and energetic, the rhythm is tight, the drums are like thunder and It reminded me of Godsmack with beefy riffs. The vocals were a pleasant surprise too as when the music is heavy I expect a few screams to surface but Mark on vocals is superb.
I hear a lot of early James Hetfield at times and sometimes bordering on Creed/Alter Bridge influences especially in track 2 ‘Favourite Drug’ The EP remains strong and consistent throughout all 6 tracks although they do sound very similar and I would have liked to have heard a few interesting bridges and breakdowns just so the listener can rest there ears for a few seconds before the next heavy riff kicks in.
The album itself is produced very well and you can imagine hearing this kind of polished performance from a band on there 3rd or 4th album so being there debut EP, it’s certainly something to be proud of.
I can imagine these guys putting on a great live show and relate to a lot of fans in most Metal/Rock Genres. A very worth while effort from a new band indeed.
