Metal/Hardcore act Icons, from Leicester, has just released their new EP Lifesigns. Currently making a name for themselves in the midlands scene, the band is out for blood with an EP full of brutality.
Right from the word go the song ‘Cataclysm’ slams into motion with a really heavy sound. A real assault on the hearing this one, with lots of screaming vocals and a layered chorus featuring clean and harsh vocals in equal measure.
More of the same with ‘Fall Of Avarice’, lots of chugging guitars and double bass drumming; plenty of heavy riffs for those in need of it. Another chorus utilising the layering of clean and harsh vocals to help establish the sound the band is clearly going for, which though derivative definitely has a lot of energy put into it. This song in particular features a lot more melody however.
‘Helios’ kicks off with a more challenging and technical riff that sets the song apart from the rest of the EP, with lots of brutal guitar tones, with some spoken word sections, with a complex chorus that conveys some emotion quite well. This is definitely the most dynamic song on the EP, with lots of different riffs and sections that move the song on quite well in a short amount of time.
Finishing things up with ‘Hitch 22’, the band is on full throttle for this one, with lots of stabbing riffs and speed on offer. Lots of guitar harmonies round the song off and the vocals work really well on this one.
The production is very good on this record, with lots of heaviness on offer, without overloading the mix. The vocals have been recorded and mixed well, and overall the EP fits in very well with the genre in terms of sound. Icons is a band that should look to release an album in the future, with a lot of energy and potential they are likely to be a great live show too!
