I had been looking forward to seeing Evil Scarecrow again ever since they played their home town gig in Nottingham earlier this year so when they announced they were playing at my local pub, I was very excited to see them.
To describe Evil Scarecrow is something I struggle with. They are a deeply disturbed metal band that bring something different to the stage. Their music is very cleverly thought out and they have such a massive presence on any stage I have seen them on.
I have to say that since I first saw the band at Hammerfest in March this year, they have been one of my favourite bands of 2012, if not, the best! The way they get the crowd involved in every single song, dancing around with others is just awesome. I think they are the only band I have seen this year where I refuse to leave my place at the front to go and get a drink because I do not want to miss anything from them!
So, it was coming up to the end of October and they were due to play Hinckley on the Saturday before Halloween, perfect for dressing up! I then get hassled by our good friends the Fragg’s to go and see them in Cardiff the night before and then they would come to the Hinckley gig the next day. Without a thought, I booked a coach ticket and off I went.
Supporting Evil Scarecrow in Cardiff were another favourite band of mine, Counterhold who were really amazing. Their performance on stage was as hot as hell and really got the crowd going at the underground Bogiez nightclub.
Evil Scarecrow hit the stage with a very growling first song War & Seek before hitting some of their crowd participation songs. Half way through the show and They played a song that most metalheads would just say WTF! The old 80’s favourite cartoon Thundercats played extremely fast and extremely metal!
You can never walk away from an Evil Scarecrow gig without feeling so much buzz and a massive smile on your face. This band needs more recognition. Watch out for them in 2013 (they are already confirmed to play Hammerfest again).
So, Saturday morning and we race back up the M5 to go for round 2 of Evil Scarecrow, this time supported by 3 local bands. Our town is a bit more of a pop music town so I was really interested in seeing how the locals would take a night of metal madness!
It was another packed venue, another room full of people in fancy dress and yes, another perfect gig from the band. They included Last Battle of the Unicorns which is a track I have not seen them play before. They also included the Book of Doom, a very dark and evil sounding song to which the crowd made up a new dance too!
There was of course the finaly that we have come to love and expect from Evil Scarecrow… Robototron, the perfect square dance where every member of the audience has to take part otherwise they get boo’d by the band! Finishing off with the most crazy can-can style moshpit to Europe’s song The Final Countdown where there is so much energy from the crowd that the band draw from to finish off an amazing 48 hours of Evil Scarecrow!!!
I caught up with Brother Pain and Dr Hell from the band between their 2 gigs and this is a little bit of the interview…(click here to read)
