Not surprisingly the Roxx’s were at this gig primarily to see Exit State, Fantasist & meet up with some mates for a pre-Xmas party! First band was the brutal sounds of My Wooden Pillow, very heavy with growling vocals from the singer Michelle, but with surprising mellower moments showing off quite a vocal range. In between the main stage bands we are entertained by Double Bass, Fiddle, Guitar & vocals of Steel Threads. A delightful acoustic mix of Power-Folk rock! Later, they included a marvelous cover ‘Ace of Spades’.
Next up a band we love to watch, the superbly eccentric Fantasist. Wonderful musicians playing their spaced out funky melodic rock’ness! A great show as always & jolly nice lads off stage as they participated on numerous photos with drunken fans! Go & check out the bands brilliant video for ‘The Divide’ or my personal favourite ‘X’s and O’s’, to get a taste of this manic trio.
They were followed by two female fronted bands, first up were Hanging Doll & we were treated to more of a gothic rock/heavy metal sound. A band with plenty of great guitar work mixed in with synth & keyboards to give a big orchestral metal sound. Then the traditional heavy metal sounds of Triaxis entertained us next, sometimes melodic but also ‘thrashy’ at times, again with some fantastic guitar work.
We then hit the front for those fabulously talented Exit State. We don’t seem to have seen them as much this year & the only disappointment was a short set. Hopefully with the exuberant bassist Phil Ireland recovering from illness we’ll see more of them live in 2013. Texas was his usual extravagant self on drums & the magnificent dual guitar sounds of Roy & Matt. On the night Roy’s voice sounding better & better. Already ‘Check out the Crazy’ and ‘Bad Days’ are classics, the incredible ‘Death of a Rockstar’ & our favourite ‘I Know Where You Are’ have the crowd in raptures.
The night ends with the catchy riffs & heavy metal sounds of Absolva. A powerhouse band playing guitar fuelled songs, ‘Flames of Justice’ & ‘Code Red’ standing out. Some excellent guitar shredding from this band. But it wasn’t quite the end as we were treated to a couple of covers with various band members jamming to finish the night in style. I do believe a I went air guitar crazy at this point!!!
