Earlier this year TBFM decided to put up a once in a lifetime opportunity for one lucky person to be part of the TBFM crew at our end of year party known as the awesome Hard Rock Hell. The winner would get to drink and party with us but also work hard, be part of the set up, do interviews and reviews and really see what goes into a weekend festival when you are part of the media. Here is Ruth’s story…
Let me start by saying this was seriously THE best competition I have EVER won – not that I have won many, but still, even if I had won a speedboat on Bulls-Eye or a million quid on the lottery this would still be top of the list! and the TBFM guys (and gals) are an amazing bunch of peeps who have a work hard, drink hard, and play even harder ethic, pushing boundaries and breaking, just a few tiny rules, to get TBFM noticed. This is probably the reason it is the best internet radio station around! So, what happened during the HRH weekend and what did I get up to with the TBFM crew? well now that I’m home and recovered, I’m going to sort through the blur in my mind and put some order to the chaos of the maddest weekend I’ve had in a while, and let you all know what I got up to – prepare yourselves!!
Thurs: Having arrived just in time to see the openers of the weekend ‘Massive Wagons’ there was a quick five mins for a meet and greet of the TBFM crew, dump the bags in the chalet, grab a Guinness or two and head straight up to stage 2 where MW delivered a great set with plenty great riffs and thumping bass. I’m not actually sure in what order the events of the next few hours occurred (maybe something to do with the alcohol consumed) but between flying the TBFM banner outside the apartments (partly to advertise and partly to scare the neighbours), Mucka stripping off and exposing his Cookie Monster boxers (eyes averted), Guido being crucified as Jesus on a broomstick (yes, really – and with a dodgy looking wig) , me being initiated into the Onsie clan, drinking with Massive Wagons – more to the point- drinking Mucka’s homemade vodkas (lush pear drop flavour, lush mint flavour and then cough medicine flavour- totally disgusting by the way, what was that one about?), building and knocking over the beer can tower – not just once, but three times and then finally watching The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, I was left wondering who’s night had actually been crazier, his or mine???
Fri: The morning started at lunchtime with an amazing glam rock band ‘Wild Side Riot’ who owned the stage with their melodic yet full rock rhythms which definitely started the day off on a high, this was followed by a pot noodle lunch and a change into my TBFM T-shirt ready for the Media Centre. Here I interviewed with Massive Wagons and Skindred! ( whaaaa, totally pinching myself at this point) it was then time for a chilled acoustic set at the Bonga Wonga – a fab venue for a bit of down time – with Bernie Torme and a few cheeky afternoon beers. Stage 1 was next for the evening’s fun with Black Star Riders and Skindred who were both awesome, they had the crowd in the palm of their hands and got the whole venue jumping. The rest of the evening sort of descended into glorious anarchy even getting the security guard to join in the ‘who’s under the cone game’ – just trust me you had to be there! – more drinks and Trippy Wicked back on Stage 1 to end the night off – I can’t actually remember going to bed on Friday night which is the sign of a great night, however somewhere between Friday night and Sat lunch was some sleep, some food, and a modicum of sanity via a walk on the beach ( where there was no bar, just a few other souls presumably looking for a bar) and to ready myself for the final day (noooooo); day 3 Sat.
Sat: Was crazy interview day in the media centre and was amazing – and all bands took part in the colouring initiative for The Teenage Cancer Trust- good on them all!! Interviews started with Spit Like This- with a cute dog in tow, followed by Fatal Smile – who actually signed Mucka’s arse (and deposited their crayons in there somewhere too!) followed by Gold and Michael freakin’ Monroe!!! Whhooooaaa at this point I have gone into overload so how the hell I managed to make head space for Snake Charmer, Blaze Bailey, Fatal Smile, Michael Monroe, Airborne and The Answer across both stages live in the evening, I don’t have the answer for – I can only guess it was the brilliant atmosphere of HRH, the fact I was having a wicked time, drinking plenty Guinness and surrounded by fab company!
So was I glad to go home on Sunday- NO, was I broken after 3 days ( that was Mucka’s cheeky plan ,NO, ha! I can hold out longer than you think) but was I glad I won the competition? Damn right I was, only thing is I want to do it all again next year!!!!!
Thanks to the TBFM crew- Jason, Lucy, Guido, Stacey, Rowan, Suzie, LJ, Barry (Martyn), Steve, Roy, Dazzle for making mine ( and Geoff’s) weekend!
