Founded little over a year ago by frontman Richard Jones, Fireroad really have been going from strength to strength. From local gigs in and around Aberdare to recently being booked to play The Steelhouse Festival and Hard Rock Hell via ‘Song of the Week’ on BBC Radio Wales all in the space of a year, the rise of Fireroad shows no signs of abating.
Fireroad’s new single ‘Your Summer Sun’ harks back to a time when guitars were jangly, alcopops and E’s were the drugs of choice and geezer-birds could rest a pint of lager between their breasts and down it in three gulps or less. A time when that bespectacled ginger bloke owned Friday night television, New Labor were putting on tea parties for the rich and famous at No. 10 and bands like Oasis, Stereophonics and Ocean Colour Scene owned the tunes being blasted out of every hipsters reconditioned Mini Clubman or VW Beetle.
It’s full on open chords, route note bass and understated yet rock solid drums right from the start. Dropping to palm muted guitars for the verse, Richard Jones’ voice provides a smooth and memorable melody drawing obvious comparisons to former band mate Kelly Jones (Richard was in ‘Tragic Love Company’ the precursor to the ‘Stereophonics’). Despite this Richard delivers his lyrics with more clarity and less gruffness and in truth sounds more like Justin Currie from Del Amitri. The bridge brings more comparison to Stereophonics while the chorus is sweet but a little lacking in clout.
‘Your Summer Sun’ is nothing new but it doesn’t even pretend to be. It’s a light and easy song with which you can kick back with your Ray Bans, sip lager and have a jolly with your mates. Sure it’s not uber-trendy, it doesn’t make you want to punch the air in time to the bass drum and is nowhere near as ferocious as the majority of music I review but it has found a certain little place in my heart. A place where I nostalgically yearn for my salad days; spent drinking turbo-shandies in pub gardens with perma-sunshine, having a craic with mates and the only worry in the world being who’s going to buy the next round.
‘Your Summer Sun’ is a tune for your BBQ party, your drive to the coast or beachside holiday. Fireroad might not yet have reached their 2nd birthday but with songwriting like this you can see why they’ve come as far as they have in such little time.
