The Smokin’ Prophets are the phoenix arisen from the ashes of TBFM favourites Hollywood Trash and that other sleazy South Coast band the Dead Pin-Ups.
Wisely HT realised that they were never going to top Adrienne Cowan as a vocalist (she returned to her native USA to continue her studies but I doubt it’s the last we’ll hear of her) and decided to call it a day.
So, a few months on everything about TSP has changed, guitarist Marty Mayhem has stepped up to the mic, Jayke Turl has handed his bass to Robbie Coulter and picked up a guitar and with only Alex staying where he is you already know this is going to be something very different to Hollywood Trash, and it is.
‘Let it Rest’ gives you the heads up straight away that this band is taking a punky direction. It is far more edgy with some hard assed rock n roll riffs driving it along. This track has a real retro feel and in places reminded me a little of Bowie’s Ziggy period namely ‘Suffragette City’ but mostly I would say that if you like the riffy punk of The Ramones you’ll get a lot out of this.
Marty’s voice has a Jack Daniels rawness that suits the style and the powerhouse driving the song is understated and subtle which gives space for the guitars to rip it up, and rip it up they do.
The chants mean this is going to be a popular end of gig song and given the following they’ve already achieved along the South Coast in such a short space of time leads me to think you’re going to be hearing a lot more of them very soon. I’ve seen them live. They deliver. Go check them out for yourselves.
