From the yet to be released (May)‘Songs of Iron’, new single ‘Drive’ by Trucker Diablo landed in my inbox with a bit of a fanfare and not a little expectation.
I loved last single ‘The Rebel’, a favourite on TBFM playlists, and I’m still peeved I missed them at Hard Rock Hell, but they clashed with Little Caesar who I’ve been waiting for years to see.
The Truckers are from Northern Ireland and last year supported Thin Lizzy on tour, so maybe my feeling that ‘Drive’ has a decidedly Thin Lizzy groove going on, is not entirely a figment of my imagination. You could slot it on to the Black Star Riders CD as a bonus track and I don’t think it would be out of place at that feast.
The production is American clean, and it has a Sunset Boulevard summer, top down, surf’s up, lets hit the beach with the Buds, vibe. And please, please don’t think I’m being detrimental here; I love this song, from its driving, choppy guitars, steering wheel tapping rhythm all the way to its SoCal harmonies.
It may be a tad more commercial than you’d expect from the boys but this is a great song, it’s a proper old school single that could well get on some of the national playlists if their PR plays it right. Fiver says it’ll get Radio 2 play at some point this year. And if the summer ever gets here this could be the ‘Sound of Summer 2013’.
