‘Joke’ is the new single from controversial underground band WEAK13. The band was founded in 1999 by Nick J Townsend a mere thirteen weeks before the millennium. Many musicians have been involved in live performances but today the band is comprised of Nick who performs both vocals and guitar, Wesley Smith on bass and Neel Parmar on drums. Inspired by “some of the greatest bands, lyricists and riff writers on the planet” and combining influences from Grunge, Metal, Industrial and Punk, WEAK13 have become one of the biggest names in British underground music.
This is a band that has caused its fair share of controversy. Live shows featuring dancing dominatrix’s and “sex pests” tied to the front of the stage have certainly garnered them a lot of attention both at home and abroad. This attention combined with hard work and an incredible creative drive has seen a rise in popularity for WEAK13 in recent years and the band are now working on a thirteen track debut album. Single ‘Sex Pest’ which can be seen as a video on Youtube was the first chance for fans to have a peek at this album and now they have another.
Now the title may be ‘Joke’ but this song is no laughing matter. Nick has covered many themes in his lyrics over the years helping to ensure that no two tracks sound the same. The theme here is the power of the written word or rather the misuse of that power. There is a strong message behind Nick’s words, lyrics like “a Bible won’t fight but believers in paper will” express some harsh truths. The song also contains references to the power of media and politics, “I’m just a joke but you follow me” could apply to many of the world’s politicians and modern celebrity culture on the whole.
The lyrics are accompanied by strong instrumentals that really bring things to life. WEAK13 have become known for using low tuned guitars to create a strange, dark sound to their songs and this is no exception. Starting with a combination of bass and drums this seems at first to be a rather steady paced tune however once the guitar kicks in things are ratcheted up a gear. Nick is known to intentionally leave mistakes in on the final mix and “prefers out-of-tune-parts” to make a song more to his liking, this combined with the bands method of doing recordings in one session gives ‘Joke’ a distinctive rough, edgy feel perfectly suited to Grunge/ Punk music.
This new release is accompanied by a new music video heavy with political satire and a touch of dark humour, which you can watch on Youtube. Alternatively you can purchase the song through Amazon or I-Tunes and I would highly recommend doing so. Overall this is a great example of the unique, raw sound that WEAK13 have developed over the years. This is one ‘Joke’ that deserves to be taken seriously!
