TBFM’s Scarlett and Big Pav are here backstage at HRH VI with Seb Bach, in his dressing room!
Hi how you doing? Alright!
So you’ve just come off stage, stage one, an absolutely packed room – how was that for you?
It was great, coz I’ve been doing this for 25 years, the last time I played Wales was 17 years ago, so when you come back after 17 years and there’s more people, like that’s fucking cool, thank you Wales!
Well people have travelled from all over the UK, and internationally as well for this particular festival.
So cool! It’s so great and it was a lot of fun you know. We did Download this summer which was insane, and Hellfest in France, and Sweden Rocks. It’s just been a great year touring Europe for me.
Late 2011 Kicking & Screaming came out of course, how well has that done?
People love it! I play the songs in concert right next to the Skid Row songs and they stick together. I think I’ve proven you know with Skid Row, Slave To The Grind, Sub-Human Race, Beside Ourselves, Bring em Bach Alive, Angel Down, Kicking & Screaming, the fans know I make good fucking albums [laughs]. I’ve made a lot of em now! When I get excited about a song, it’s a real excitement. It’s not fake, and I can’t fake that feeling. If a songwriter writes a song with me and I don’t like it, I cant lie to him and say ‘oh this is great’. I either love it or I can’t sing it. I cant sing a song that I don’t love.
You don’t feel it?
I’ve tried to, but.. in the old band, I would come up with something that I wouldn’t be into, and I’d go up to the mic and try to be a good guy and one of the team, and I would start singing and then my mouth would just shut [laughs] and everyone would go ‘what the fuck dude’? I don’t know what to tell you – I can’t pretend to rock. I have to love the music. I didn’t get into this business to release music that I don’t like. I got into this business to create music that I fucking love and I wanna grab you by the collar and go ‘listen to this’! [laughs]
How hard do you find it, with radio stations and the like, to get your new stuff heard? Everyone likes to play old Skid Row tracks that everyone knows..
Well, I just keep my head down. I don’t bother like… the video for the song ‘Kicking & Screaming’ is over a million plays on Youtube. A million plays is a million plays, and you cant fucking argue with that! I mean how many people is that? It’s a million fucking people! So I’m lucky you know, I just keep my fucking head down you know. I don’t say ‘oh whats everyone else doing?’ I don’t give a shit what anyone is doing. I have one life, and I’ve been doing this all my life, and just like Ronnie James Dio, I will do this when I’m 63, god-willing, if I make it that far! But I am that kind of guy, I will be singing ’18 And Life’, hitting the scream, god-willing, when I’m fucking in my 60’s, coz I can do it!
And you also do quite a bit of acting as well, you’ve been on Broadway doing Jeckyll & Hyde, Jesus Christ Superstar..
I’ve just been offered another lead role in another Broadway show that I might take, I don’t know, maybe I will, maybe I wont.
Can you tell us which one that is?
Really?… damn! And you also appeared in Rock of Ages I believe, I haven’t seen the film myself yet..
Yeah.. you haven’t seen it? You’re not missing anything! [laughs]
Even though you’re in it?
I don’t get that movie. I don’t get it.. [turns to Big Pav] did you see it?
It’s like Glee, like a rock version of Glee..
There is pretty much nothing rock about that movie. Rock n Roll is fucking badass, and it’s just too…… I don’t want to say a word that’s gonna get me in trouble..
Oh go on…
No….. it’s too…. no, no, I cant… it’s too erm… it’s too effeminate. It’s not tough, its fucking…. it’s not.. OK, what’s a good Rock n Roll movie that’s Rock n Roll? Let There Be Rock by AC/DC – you know when Phil Rudd’s doing donuts in his car in a field. You know – there’s good Rock n Roll movies! God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, that Jack Osbourne made about his dad – that made me cry in the middle of it. When Ozzy was talking about Randy Rhoads, I couldn’t believe he was so emotional about all that. Yeah that was a great movie.
So what’s next for Seb Bach?
I have two big things that I’m working on right now that I’ll be announcing on my Facebook page, so I cant tell you right now, but 2 big projects.
And can we expect you back over in the UK in 2013?
Well I don’t book the shows. Fans will say ‘why aren’t you playing Pittsburgh?’ and I’m like, ‘because Pittsburgh didn’t fucking ask!’. I’ll play anywhere, I love to play! Book the band for fucks sakes [laughs].. but some fans think that the bands decide where they’ll play. Like, ‘hey Australia, I’m coming!’ It doesn’t work like that, you have to ask me to play, and book the band. The bands do not decide where the bands play. Promoters do. So the fans should know that. I’m not mad at Pittsburgh! [laughs]
Is there anywhere in particular you do like to play?, home gigs?, or are you just happy to be out?
I love Australia! I love anywhere where its packed. Tonight, I loved it, it was packed. Everyone had a great time.
Thank you so much for speaking to us
